How to Forgive and Let Go of Anger

February 8, 2026 By Alison Laverty

Can you forgive and let go of your anger towards a person who has wronged you or caused you harm? My relatives often remind me throughout my childhood and into adulthood: “You must forgive and forget.” Seriously how do you truly forgive and forget someone who intentionally hurts you. Can it be done?

One of the themes in my memoir is forgiveness. Something which isn’t easy to do, but a must if you wish to move on with your life. Which is why you need to read my memoir to understand exactly where forgiveness helped me heal my childhood trauma.

But here’s a thought, what happens when you can’t forgive? Are you considered a bad person?

The truth is, you are who you think you are. In this post I share why forgiveness leads to freedom. You find the peace to move.

Forgive and Let Go of Your Anger

Let’s consider this thought. When someone intentionally hurts you, why do you truly have to forgive and let go?

I was brought up in a strict home environment where children were meant to be seen and not heard. Which means I had to lower myself in defeat when others say, You are wrong! You are so ungrateful! You are arrogant!

Even though I knew I was not. But what does it mean to truly forgive?

Forgiveness happens when you stop feeling anger or resentment or show vindictive behavior towards a person who you know had intentionally caused you pain.

Here’s what I learned—you cannot forgive anyone, if you are broken within. Anger and resentment are negative energy. It cannot fix the sadness inside you. In order to move forward, you have to let go.

Have you ever felt that life is one big play of repetitive cycles constantly occurring like a nightmare? There’s the hint. Take note of what’s repeating because that’s a clue showing you where your attention is needed to heal. When you fully understand what’s causing you pain, you’ll find the answers you seek easily.

Ever notice when things go wrong in other people’s life, they blame someone else and not take responsibility for their actions? It’s never their fault, and they take the easy way out by blaming others.

Learn to take responsibility for your life. Forgiveness is a lifetime lesson we continually learn. No one can force you to forgive. Because forgiveness is truly an act of love.

All of us in one way or another are struggling internally, fighting demons in our head.

Two things happened when you are ready to forgave and let go of anger

1. You break the cycle of violence or anger, the negative energy passed down from the generations before.

2. You learn to accept the circumstances in your life was not your own doing and can move forward with life peacefully.

Search for the gift in the pain and suffering you experience. You’ll find a key that unlocks this dormant treasure, use it to break free from the cycle of destruction planted inside you.

Rejection or acceptance .. both have the energy to either destroy you or raise you. What lens are you wearing that is stopping you from moving forward? Perhaps its time to forgive and let go.
