How to Make a Traditional English Yorkshire Pudding Recipe

June 22, 2025 By Alison Laverty

This is a traditional English Yorkshire Pudding recipe I use for our family roast. And guess what, it’s easy to make. Whenever I make them, it brings me back in time to the early 90s when I travelled to UK and Scotland. A life changing adventure I’ll always treasure.

Traditional English Yorkshire Pudding recipe made with Sunday roast

It is here where I was first introduced to Yorkshire pudding. Since then I searched for a recipe to make these little puddings at home. My simple recipe is altered according to my own experience with baking them and I share the recipe below.

The traditional Yorkshire pudding recipe requires simple ingredients of flour, milk, eggs and oil. There are two key tips I’d like to share with you which will make the most delicious and fluffy Yorkshire pudding for your Sunday roast or any other day roast. And if you prefer to have it as a dessert, it’s lovely with golden syrup too.

Traditional Yorkshire Pudding

It’s taken me years to get a good traditional Yorkshire pudding recipe. And it’s easy to make them using these two tips.

1. Let your mixture rest well after stirring all the ingredients together by covering it with a towel.

2. A high temperature oven will help make them rise. I preheat my oven to around 230 C (450 F) and place my oiled muffin tray in so it’s smoking hot before pouring the mixture in.

Trust me just following these two steps will ensure your Yorkshire pudding rises to be crispy and puffy. Click on the video below to see how I make the puddings.

Ingredients

115grams all purpose flour
Pinch of salt
285ml milk
3 eggs
Vegetable oil

Method of Cooking

  1. Preheat oven 230 Celsius or 450 Fahrenheit
  2. Add salt to flour and sieve it.
  3. Add 3 eggs – one at a time and mix it with a wooden spoon.
  4. Then gradually add milk and stir it into a mixture.
  5. Here is my secret .. add a little oil and mix it through.
  6. Cover mixture and set aside.
  7. In a muffin tray, add about 1cm or 1/2 inch oil into each section.
  8. Place the muffin tray in the oven.
  9. When the oil is very hot .. take it out and pour your Yorkshire pudding mixture into each section of your muffin tray.
  10. Put your tray into the oven to cook for about 15 to 18 minutes or until golden brown.

This is important to remember .. do not open the oven before they are cooked or they will not rise. And there you have it .. nice golden brown traditional Yorkshire pudding. Crispy outside and soft fluffy on the inside. Enjoy!
