The Power of Words Can Make a Difference

February 23, 2022 By Alison Laverty

Can the power of words make a difference?

What drives you to write your story?

Most writers I know are fueled with a desire to bring their imagination to life through their writing. They create a world either around their experiences, or use their imagination to create a story from their heart.

Wow…Image how the power of words can bring their imaginations to life!

What a tremendously powerful gift, the art of communication through the use of words to inspire action and it can — and does — make a difference.

The Power of Words Can Bind

Have you ever heard someone speak with so much energy that the audience immediately connect to and engage with their message?

They command and capture their audience’s attention in just a single sentence.

This same energy is there in your written word. As you pour out your colorful imaginings or describe your experiences, I hope you know it has a binding power to heal and make to a difference others.

Who Do You Write For First?

I have been writing to express my thoughts and feelings since my teenage years when I kept journals. Writing about my experiences, my achievements, my fears, my hopes and my dreams.

I did this as a method of visualizing my future. However, that very act of writing gave me a sense of healing in my life.

Journaling is one of the most powerful ways to create change and discover growth for yourself. It’s a wonderful way to explore the lessons learned along this journey of life and it creates the gift of legacy through the power of words.

It is a beautiful way to express yourself and it can be the foundation for that book you want so badly to write.

Time to Release Your Creative Genius

Are you born with the gift of creativity or is it something developed through the experiences of life?

Think back to your own childhood, or watch small children at play. This is the precious time when children’s imaginations form and they create their own ideas and ways to amuse themselves — and for no other reason than pure fun.

Imagination running wild and free, showing a glimpse into the gift of their creativity.

All of us create our own lives by the choices we make. Doesn’t this make us naturally creative? When you write, you create stories from your imagination or from your experiences. Your ideas fuel the creative genius in you.

We all have it, we just sometimes need to tap back into it.

How Stories Bind Us

There is a powerful play that runs in the imagination of your mind and through your heart, infused with the essence of your soul. When you write, the characters in your heart are brought to life.

Your hero begins the journey as a young naïve character. They go through a series of changes to reach a place or experience that everyone yearns for. It is the acceptance of a challenge to experience an adventure that leads the character into growth and to be able to take charge of their destiny.

We might think of this as fiction, but it’s the same for non-fiction. When you write a compelling story, you open up a doorway into a vision.

Your written story has a hidden message with the ability to inspire and touch the reader in a way that can spur and ignite their power to become invincible. You take your reader by the hand and walk them in your footsteps to experience everything imaginable and unthinkable.

Together you move through time and go deeper into the world you are creating or describing. Your words can touch their soul and unlock a mystery within them, or can take them on a quest to connect them to your emotional roller coaster ride to your destiny.

Ultimately, they see themselves as the character that binds them into your world.

When you fall, they fall; when you rise from the ashes of regret and disappointment, you are leading them into the victory and triumph of the human spirit.

Wow… what an incredible difference it makes for someone to feel so alive just by experiencing what you have experienced. Your adventure can awaken their desires and can spur them into action because your story inspired them to change.

The Art of Crafting From Your Heart

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. [Mahatma Gandhi]

When I was young, I was always taught that,

To make a difference, you must first make the change in your life.

This is what I try to instill in my own children, to encourage them to explore and have a sense of adventure.

It is said that we all have a story inside us to share. However you choose to share it — whatever genre or style you choose to write, first take the time to read, learn, and understand why stories are popular and why we connect with them so deeply.

With any new endeavor, learning also involves practice. However shaky you writing might feel when you start, it will improve over time.

How to Focus on Your Craft

When you’re writing your book, you can ask these questions to help tap into what will connect you with your reader:

  1. Why are you writing your book?
  2. Whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction, what results are you focusing on in the minds of your readers?
  3. What are they hoping to take away from reading a book?
  4. The insight or message in the story you are sharing that will create an impact and make your readers want to share it with their friends?

What do you think your readers want to find in a story?

It’s simple: they want to experience a future event created by a memory in this present moment by your words. They want an experience that will move them to tears or make them laugh and experience joy. They want to feel a connection to your story.

All of us have a special gift to share in our connection with others. The words you use can either hurt or inspire others to change.

When your pen bleeds onto a page in your book, you open up a world where readers can experience and feel themselves as the character in your magical journey. You can inspire them to believe in the impossible.

Why Do You Write, Really?

For a simple yet powerful reason, you want to be heard. We all do!

It’s an assurance that you are not alone and it makes you feel a sense of belonging. Everyone is looking for a connection with others to experience this wonderful gift called life.

You are the only one person in the whole world who has your special gift to share with others. The world needs you to shine out and your story can make a difference.

Are you ready to share the power of your words to empower others?

Why are you writing (and I know that’s a hard question because the answer is usually, well, because…!). What inspires you and what keeps you going?
