How to Make Spring Rolls (Popiah Goreng)

July 31, 2025 By Alison Laverty

This is my family recipe for spring rolls, (popiah goreng).

When I lived in Singapore, everyday after school, I rush home for a delicious lunch made by mom. I studied in Katong Convent and took the bus number 41, at the back of my school off Marine Parade Road. Those memories are still so fresh in my mind. And now my family’s favorite food includes spring rolls (popiah goreng).

Spring rolls is one of my favorite childhood comfort food. Do you have a specific comfort food your mum makes?

We’re always reminded of our childhood memories. And maybe those memories have a purpose to show us how much we were loved. In a world that so filled with noise and clutter, we must always cherish these shared memories. They show us of how much we are loved. And now it’s our turn to pass on that love and guidance to our own children to carry on this legacy.

Make Spring Rolls (Popiah Goreng)

This is my family recipe for spring rolls. I’m so happy to share this with you. It is one of the foods I’ve mentioned in my story. The memoir I’m writing. And while I can’t find some of the ingredients here in Australia, I substitute as best I can. Enjoy!

Ingredients

500gms Mince pork or chicken
Mince 2 to 3 pips garlic minced
2 large turnips (bang kuang) or substitute with half cabbage
2 teasp sesame seeds
1 palm sugar disc

Marinade your meat with 1 tbsp soy sauce and a tsp of sesame oil
Salt and pepper to accordingly to taste

Method

  1. Crush garlic and mince roughly.
  2. Slice finely your cabbage or turnips.
  3. Toast your sesame seeds till golden brown.
  4. Fry garlic, add palm sugar and cook until caramelized.
  5. Then add your meat and fry.
  6. When meat is half cooked, add toasted sesame seeds.
  7. Then add you turnip or cabbage little by little until all is cooked and remove from heat.
  8. Boil 4 eggs and cut them up into small pieces.
  9. When your spring rolls fillings are cooled, scoop them into a bowl. Ensure you strain the gravy.
  10. Get two packets of spring roll warps or pastry and peel them into single sheets.

Now its time to wrap your popiah to make fried spring rolls.

Place a little filling and eggs onto your wrappers. Fold the pointed end over the filling, then fold in both left and right sides. Moisten the remaining edges of your wrapper with a little water mixed with corn flour. Now your final step is to fry them up and serve them with a nice chilli sauce. Enjoy cooking!
