Welcome Author ~ Julie Beekman
What childhood memories gave you so much joy?
I think any exploring I did, time with my dad, (he died when I was seven) and my dog.
Who did you consider your mentor in your growing years?
I had a few teachers that meant the world to me. I trusted them, they were safe harbours. Every child needs an advocate and I had quite a few.
How hard have you worked to get here?
I’m laughing because I’m not sure I’ve gotten anywhere. Seriously though, I’ve had a lot of therapy.
Inspiration for Writing Two Trees
There is something about your memoir title, Two Trees that grabbed my attention. What inspired you to write Two Trees?
When I was about thirteen, I started seeing an art therapist. I wouldn’t say much in our sessions, so she had me draw. I always drew one tree. After working with her for several months, I trusted her and I drew two trees.
How many drafts have you written before you reached publication?
I want to say two edits, but some areas of the book got a heck of a lot more and some parts, no editing at all.
What is the message (theme or takeaway) would you want readers to embrace about your story?
There are so many people that come from adversity and/or traumatic circumstances. i think Two Trees is about not being a victim. It’s about moving through trauma and coming to the other side with gratitude.
Who would you choose to play the protagonist, you in your story?
That’s a tough one. I wrote the book from the perspective of the age I was during certain events. I know I would want Shirley MacLaine to play my adoptive Mother, Marge.
What scene or memory brought you joy with writing?
I’m going to answer this a little differently. What brought me joy was the research I put into the book. For instance, I write about 70’s television a bit and Bob Barker, the game show host. I tried to remember all the things about Bob Barker that made me so happy and when I researched, I found that my memory of how his game show, Truth or Consequences worked, was spot on even though the memory was from early childhood.
What amazing experience did you learn while writing Two Trees?
I realized just how strong I am.
What’s Next for Julie Beekman
Is there a new book in the making? Could you share a little blurb or let us know a possible release date, etc..
I am writing a follow-up Memoir to Two Trees. The book begins and ends with me finding my biological Mother. There’s so much that happens after that, so I must continue. Although I’m currently writing, it might take a bit, since I’m a partner in a thriving business.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to become a writer?
Just write. NOW is the time. Workshopping your writing is invaluable. You’re accountable for submitting every week, you’re around other writers and you’re getting lots of feedback.
